This evening I am translating Scivias by the twelfth century abbess and prophetess, Hildegard von Bingen, yet tomorrow is my day off.
Naturally, me being means that this next day is spent doing chores (long overdue) and more importantly: work. The old ball and chain has a book which needs editing again. I had a dream about her and her team recently, which was... perhaps informative, a psychic vision of the future (or maybe just some kind of wish fulfilment dream: because it concerned academia). So anyway, I have to dredge through this work, which is a not unenjoyable a task, but a task nonetheless.
I was thinking of reading some more criminal law, but am in two minds whether to bother.
A huge inspiration for me throughout my life are, and have always been, military men, people like Major Bennyworth (Somerset LI, originally, ACF: our old commander) and Commander Rod' Robertson, a great guy. Major Bennyworth always said, "If you think you're beat, you are beat[en]." In other words, it is a battle of the spirit, of morale, to persevere, switch on, stay on side, have a sense of urgency about the mission (or in academic terms: assignment).
On the one hand, being a paralegal sucks, big-time. Fourteen measley grand a year for doing the work of a lawyer?! Are you kidding me? No no no no no. On the other hand, I have to fork out more money than both my previous degrees combined, up front!! Over the space of four years, take very f- difficult examinations and assignments, come out with a first and become a proper bona fides barrister. Job done. There is no other way. No clerk, no solicitor, no legal secretary even (not an unimportant position, very much so), but it's barrister all the way: aut legister aut nihil.
£3,600 a year (two modules at once) is a chunk of change right there. Never mind Thomas a Kempis' bull-sheat about doing away with one's books and not studying. No no no no. We will study ('we' being little Ronulus and I, my Cantabrian terrier Ronulus Latrator 'little Ronnie Barker').
Max.
